In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that enjoy playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours each day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they are also great companions for children.

Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live close by. They can make ear-shattering calls and screeches which could be disruptive to those living in condos or apartments.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help correct any behavior issues.

Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After  Bonnie scarlet macaw for sale  stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to sea.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative in a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her retirement from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Like any species of animal in captivity, a captive gold and blue macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed can expect to live for up to 60 years. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

A gold and blue macaw can be a charming companion who is also very smart. They are known for their ability to master new tricks and phrases quickly. This bird is perfect for those who are just beginning their journey to the avian species.

Additionally to that, this bird requires plenty of interaction, and will bond with her human family members easily. Macaws with gold and blue colors frequently make loud screams, including "flock calls," which is part of their natural behavior. They may even squabble and chew at times, particularly when they are frustrated or bored. It is important for prospective pet owners to keep in mind that this type of behavior is normal and should be expected.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the condition of Lolita and her health, but there are still questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health at some point are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring and squid daily.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticised for the quality of food that they provide to their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many consider too small for her.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is undeniable, Lolita's health continues to deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see her released back into nature. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as a tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.

The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is aging quickly and her health is deteriorating.

Since her captor does not have to divulge this information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However,  glaucous macaw  of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she could be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
